Russia’s Volga-Dnepr Airlines Starts Cargo Flights to Iran

Increased trade between Iran and Russia has boosted the air travel between the two countries. In May 2016, S7 and Ural Airlines were granted rights to operate 12 weekly flights to Tehran, Isfahan and Mashhad. Now it is time for the cargo operations to see an expansion.

The Iran Airports Company (IAC) has signed an agreement with JTI International and Volga-Dnepr Airlines to start cargo flights to and from the Iranian cities, IRNA reported today. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Iran and Russia welcomed the decision and the authorities are currently investigating the details.

The Ulyanovsk region considers Iran as one of the most reliable and perspective partners. We are working closely in a wide variety of industries, and the next cycle of development of these relations is especially important for us, Ulyanovsk region’s Governor Sergey Morozov said in September 2016.

The agreement is subjected to cargo flights to and from Ulyanovsk Vostochny Airport to a number of Iranian cities. The operating airline Volga-Dnepr Airlines, will operate the services by Ilyushin-76TD with start in December 2016.

The cargo flights will generally transport building materials, equipments and machines to Iran. Trade and Economic officials in the Ulyanovsk region say that they aim to become the main export hub of Russian goods to Iran.

In September 2016, a large Iranian company signed an agreement with the Russian region.
