In a new ranking released by The French university École nationale de l’aviation civile (ENAC), seven Iranian airports find themselves among the top 50 airports in the Middle East and North African region (MENA) with most growth in passengers, cargo and movements.
Tehran Imam Khomeini Airport (IKIA) ranks 2nd in the growth of movements noting an increase of 16,7% in 2015 compared to 2014. Shiraz ranks 4th with a 15% growth and Mashhad, Isfahan, Kish Island, Ahvaz, Tabriz and Tehran-Mehrabad all reserve a place in the top 50.
When looking at the growth of passengers, IKIA notes an increase of 19,7% and takes the 3rd place. Shiraz follows as the 2nd Iranian airport on 10th place with 11,7%. Mashhad, Tabriz, Kish Island and Isfahan follow in the top 50 here as well with percentages above zero, but above 6.
The airport with most passengers in 2015 was Dubai that handled over twice as much as the 2nd airport Doha with 31 million passengers. Tehran-Mehrabad ranks 9th, Tehran-Imam Khomeini 18th and Mashhad 16th. The Tehran Area, Tehran-Mehrabad together with Tehran-Imam Khomeini, would in total rank 6th with 20,758,113 passengers in 2015. It is worth noticing that Tehran-Mehrabad together with Ahvaz are the only Iranian airports who showed negative development from 2014 to 2015 as Tehran-Mehrabad’s passenger numbers decreased by 2% and Ahvaz 0,6%.
Doha, Jeddah and Tunis took the top 3 lead in cargo with percentages varying from 28% to 46%. Tehran-Imam Khomeini Airport makes its lowest ranking here given the 6th place with a growth of 16,4%.
