Two Korean airlines, Korean Air and Asiana Airlines have applied to launch flights from Seoul to Tehran according to the South Korean Ministry of Transport.
Both of the airlines are reportedly considering both freighter and passenger services between the two capitals. Only one airline will get the permission. In 1998, Iran and South Korea signed an agreement to allow 4 weekly flights between the two countries. Since then there have not been any direct flights. The airline that gets the permission to fly to Iran will have to follow the old agreement, if it is not changed. Although, the South Korean ministry has already suggested to increase the number of allowed flights from 4 to daily.
If any of these two Korean airlines get their proposals approved, it will mark the first regular flight by a Korean national flag carrier into Iran since 1973 when Korean Air’s cargo aircraft landed in the country once.
Asiana Airlines, is conisdered to be one step ahead of Korean Air in the process of getting the permission. The airline’s Chairman visited Iran a few weeks ago and stressed to establish this route.
