Iran Aseman Airlines is planning to launch a second route to the major Turkish city of Istanbul. Aseman already operates daily flights out of Tehran to Istanbul, but is now as well expanding to Urmia. As of 10 February 2016 the airline is expanding to Urmia, which gets its first ever scheduled flight route to an international destination. The route will be operated by an A320.
Turkish Airlines previously tried to launch Istanbul – Urmia simultaneously with the launch of the Ahwaz flights but cancelled its plans. Urmia is in the province of Azerbaijan, which holds a large number of Turkish, Azeri population.
